About Over the Hill
Some say that the meaning of life is to have beautiful children. Everything
else flows from this - the quest for a beautiful partner, the foundation of a
beautiful family, the love invested to nurture the next generation...
This is the family tree for the Hill family, originally from UK but now living
in Geneva, Switzerland. My great grandparents were Hill, Cartwright,
Pottinger, Clark, Brassington, Hill (again!), Shaw and Simcock.
We have traced 17th Century Pottinger ancestors that were born in Orkney,
Scotland. An epic voyage was undertaken by William B. Pottinger when only 10
years of age. He sailed for 6 months with his parents from Orkney to Victoria
on the barque Knight Bruce, via Cape Horn, arriving on Christmas eve, 1864.
Photos of William and an account of his eventful life are recorded herein.
Another Pottinger is the subject of high drama on the high seas. Captain John
Pottinger died tragically during raging seas aboard his ship, the Rangitiki in
1897 off the coast of New Zealand. His son, John George Pottinger provides a
gripping eye witness account in the letter that bears the sad tidings to his
sister back in Orkney Scotland. Click on the sails of the Rangitiki below to
read the letter.
Of particular interest is the Simcock line, which reveals one Timothy Simcock,
b1821, who was transported aged 23 to Australia on account of horse-stealing.
A wonderful, detailed account of this is provided along with an illustration
of the convict ship that brought Timothy around the world. Also posted are
photos of Timothy's fob watch (courtesy of Timothy's great grandson, Norm
Simcock of Australia). Click on Timothy's ship below to read more.
Thank you for visiting this site. I would be very happy to exchange
information connected with this tree. Special thanks go to Victoria Backhouse
and E. J. Simcock (Simcock line), to Teresa Geiger & Susan Gibb (Pottinger
line, see www.susansite.net) and to Joan Barrett (Randall line).
